  1. 1903-1957. Hungarian-born US scientist and
  2. mathematician, known for his pioneering work
  3. on computer design. He invented his
  4. celebrated `rings of operators' (called Von
  5. Neumann algebras) in the late 1930s, and also
  6. contributed to set theory, games theory,
  7. cybernetics (with his theory of
  8. self-reproducing automata, called Von Neumann
  9. machines), and the development of the atomic
  10. and hydrogen bombs. He was born in Budapest
  11. and became an assistant professor of physical
  12. mathematics at Berlin University before
  13. moving to Princeton, USA, 1929, where he
  14. later became professor of mathematics. In the
  15. early 1940s he described a design for a
  16. stored-program computer.
